Southwest’s rewards redesign separates points from progress
The planned 2027 program shows why a booking balance, a qualification counter and a benefit’s validity date need separate attention.

A rewards balance and progress toward a travel benefit answer different questions. One concerns what a traveler can redeem; the other records qualifying activity. Southwest's planned Rapid Rewards changes make that distinction especially useful, because the program will use a shared qualification track for status and Companion Pass benefits.
CNBC Select's October 22 report by Jason Stauffer highlights changes to Companion Pass qualification, including the treatment of credit card bonuses. The broader lesson is to look beyond the number of points an offer promises and identify which balance those points actually enter. Southwest says the new program takes effect January 1, 2027.
Two balances with different jobs
Southwest's 2027 FAQ distinguishes ordinary Rapid Rewards points from Tier Qualifying Points, or TQPs. Ordinary points are redeemable for travel and do not expire while the member's account remains open. TQPs measure progress toward tier status and Milestone Rewards; they cannot be redeemed and reset annually.
That distinction changes how an account should be read. A redeemable balance is not evidence that a traveler has reached a status threshold. Equally, resetting a qualification counter is a different event from spending the points available for a booking. The shared word can conceal two separate functions.
Companion trips become a milestone
Under Southwest's announced 2027 structure, earning 95,000 TQPs or completing 75 qualifying one-way flights unlocks three Companion Pass trips. Each trip can cover a one-way or round-trip itinerary. Platinum status, earned at 140,000 TQPs or 100 qualifying one-way flights, increases that allowance to unlimited Companion Pass trips.
Unlimited describes the number of eligible trips, rather than an unconditional promise of a seat. Southwest's published terms require availability and exclude applicable taxes and fees. Those conditions belong alongside the threshold when explaining what the benefit provides.
The airline's Milestone Rewards guide also separates the clock for earning from the clock for using benefits. Qualifying progress resets on January 1, while Milestone Rewards benefits remain valid through December 31 of the following year. An earned benefit's expiration date and the annual progress counter need separate attention. Southwest says existing Companion Pass holders retain their benefits until the end date shown in their account.
Follow the qualifying activity
Southwest says new-cardmember welcome bonuses, referral bonuses and anniversary points will not earn TQPs under the new system, even though they can still produce redeemable Rapid Rewards points. A points bonus can therefore increase the balance available for travel without moving the qualifying counter toward Companion Pass benefits.
This is a useful way to interpret a loyalty announcement: separate the activity that earns points, the activity that qualifies for a benefit, and the conditions for using that benefit. A larger promotional number cannot, by itself, explain all three. The current terms need to establish the connection.
The changes are scheduled for 2027, so an account needs to be understood against the applicable program year and benefit dates. Keeping the earning rules, qualification counter and usable benefits distinct gives travelers a clearer account of what the numbers mean. It also makes a program redesign easier to evaluate on its actual terms.
